Warriors Waive Mbenga in Favor of Center Perovic from D-League

OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 6 (AP) -- The Golden State Warriors waived center D.J. Mbenga on Sunday after just 16 games with the team.

Golden State also recalled center Kosta Perovic from its minor league affiliate in Bakersfield.

Mbenga, the former Dallas reserve, signed with the Warriors on Nov. 17. He averaged 1.2 points and 1.9 rebounds with the club, but Golden State cut him before Thursday, when his contract would have become a guaranteed deal for the rest of the season.

Perovic was assigned to the Bakersfield Jam on the same day Golden State signed Mbenga. The Serbian center was the 38th overall pick in the 2006 draft, but hasn't played with the Warriors.

Doors open for January sales

The winter transfer window opened on 1 January, offering the 16 sides still entertaining hopes of lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy the opportunity to strengthen their squads ahead of the resumption of the competition in February. uefa.com considers who is likely to be active in the January sales.

Striking reinforcements
With goals hard to come by at the highest level, it is perhaps little surprise that a number of the contenders are looking to bolster their forward lines. Ronaldo has been linked with CR Flamengo and Fenerbahçe SK, so the onus is particularly strong on holders AC Milan, only the tenth-highest scorers in Serie A, to add to their attacking arsenal. Ronaldinho and Didier Drogba have been outlandishly mooted, though neither FC Barcelona nor Chelsea FC are likely to be too keen to lose their services, and neither would be eligible for the UEFA Champions League; all sides can register one player who has appeared in UEFA competition for another team provided it is not the same tournament.

Amauri link
More likely is Amauri, the Brazilian striker who has scored seven goals for US Città di Palermo this season, and the Sicilian club may have their hands full in January batting away suitors, with FC Internazionale Milano apparently keen on midfielder Fabio Simplicio. Sevilla FC's Enzo Maresca could also fill a midfield void left by injuries to Patrick Vieira, Dejan Stanković and Olivier Dacourt, and the Andalusian side's striker Aleksandr Kerzhakov is apparently attracting admiring glances from FC Dynamo Kyiv. Indeed, among Spain's three remaining UEFA Champions League hopefuls, much of the talk has been of exits rather than entries.

Barça departure
Real Madrid CF duo Javier Balboa and Roberto Soldado have voiced desires for more first-team football, and Jerzy Dudek has said similar as he looks to keep in the thoughts of Poland coach Leo Beenhakker ahead of UEFA EURO 2008™, though he admits Bernd Schuster is unlikely to let him go. The Madrid coach is no doubt aware of the value of good goalkeepers, as is FC Barcelona counterpart Frank Rijkaard after injury to second-choice Albert Jorquera left Víctor Valdés exposed. They have been linked with Manchester City FC youngster Kasper Schmeichel, though this has been rather buried amongst talk of Ronaldinho joining either Milan or Chelsea, and Gianluca Zambrotta and Eidur Gudjohnsen returning to Italy and England respectively.

African contingent
No talk of transfers would be complete without mention of Chelsea, who already seem set to sign promising Serbia centre-back Branislav Ivanović from FC Lokomotiv Moskva in a deal worth €13m. With Drogba among four stellar names likely to be in African Cup of Nations action in January and February, strikers are top of the agenda, however. Dimitar Berbatov and Nicolas Anelka would fit the bill, the latter revealing that "the chairmen [of Bolton Wanderers FC and Chelsea] are discussing it. I really hope it happens, especially as I am able to play in the Champions League". Reading FC's Kevin Doyle may present a cheaper option, yet as manager Avram Grant admits: "The media will link us to 2000 players." The same is true of Manchester United FC, who have already signed Angolan striker Manucho, and are also rumoured to be interested in the unsettled Berbatov, as well as FC Porto right-back Bosingwa and even an audacious bid to re-sign Henrik Larsson on a loan deal.

Defensive reinforcement
Another of Larsson's former employers, Celtic FC, have been tipped to make a similar bid, though far more likely are the arrivals of two full-backs – Sevilla's Andreas Hinkel and Brazilian Dyego Coelho. The Scottish champions are eyeing attacking midfielders too, as were Olympiacos CFP before securing Slovenian Mirnes Sisič on a three-and-a-half year contract. CA River Plate midfielder Fernando Belluschi could be next on Takis Lemonis's wish list. In Turkey, Fenerbahçe's over-reliance on Semih Şentürk has sparked interest in Ronaldo, and their Brazilian coach Zico is keen to add to the six compatriots he can already call upon. One may be on his way, however, as Mehmet Aurélio is reportedly attracting interest from Valencia CF.

Zé Roberto II
Some clubs appear to be settling for status quo. Liverpool FC are keen to secure on-loan Javier Mascherano on a permanent contract, while Arsenal FC manager Arsène Wenger, despite casting admiring glances at Samir Nasri, insists he "will not go into the transfer market". AS Roma seem happy with their lot, as do Porto, whose coach Jesualdo Ferreira rubbished a move for Belluschi, adding that while the club was "not sleeping", he had total confidence in his squad. Porto's last-16 opponents FC Schalke 04 have also been linked with a move for South American talent, in the form of Uruguay striker Vicente Sánchez and Brazilian José Roberto de Oliveira, dubbed Zé Roberto II due to his similarity to the FC Bayern München man. A busy month is in prospect. www.uefa.com

Tiger Woods wins second consecutive Target World Challenge - his 8th victory of 2007

For the second consecutive year, Tiger Woods didn't exactly play the role of polite host in the Target World Golf Challenge.

Even after a 10-week layoff, Woods capped the 2007 season Sunday with a seven-stroke victory over what started out as a 16-player field at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The world No. 1 player finished with a 4-under-par 68 to tie the tournament record at 22-under 266, while setting the mark for the largest margin of victory in the event.

The first-place finish earned Woods a $1.35 million paycheck that will go to the Tiger Woods Learning Center. Woods, who had seven victories and recorded $10.8 million in earnings during the official PGA Tour season, said it was a great way to close the year — something he discussed with his caddie, Steve Williams, while walking up to the 18th green.

"It's been a long year, but also one that we've thoroughly enjoyed," Woods told reporters. "I just can't wait until, obviously, next season starts. I think that's where this break has been really nice.

"I've been fired up to come back and practice and play and get after it again, and this week gives me just a lot of excitement heading into my practice sessions and getting ready for next year."

Masters champion Zach Johnson finished second, earning $840,000 after shooting 15-under 273 in the four-day, 72-hole event. First-round leader Jim Furyk finished third at 13-under 275, while Lee Westwood was fourth at 11-under 277 and Henrik Stenson and Steve Stricker tied for fifth at 9-under 279.

Johnson said he came away pleased with most of his performance.

"As a whole this week, if there's any negative I would say it was the par 5s," Johnson told reporters. "I just didn't capitalize when I could or should have, but that's being pretty picky.

"A lot of positives this week, and certainly as I look to a couple times over the last two or three days, I think it's given me a little bit of confidence with what I'm doing, and it's certainly going to help me going into '08, so I like what I'm doing."

Woods, golf's most reliable closer, began the final round with a six-shot lead over Furyk. However, Furyk birdied five of his first nine holes, and some miscues by Woods closed the margin to two strokes at the turn.

"The front nine went as good as I could have expected," Furyk said in his post-round press conference. "Tiger had a couple loose shots … and all of a sudden it was looking good."

However, Woods responded with a 12-foot birdie putt, while Furyk three-putted from four feet to turn the tide.

"It got a little interesting there," said Woods, who shot a tournament record 62 in Friday's second round. "I made two mistakes there at (No. 7) and (No. 9). Jimmy played just a great front nine, even with a mistake on the second hole, and the whole tournament changed at the 10th.

"It looked like I was going to be basically one up with eight to go. I made mine and Jimmy made a couple mistakes there, and all of a sudden it went from — back up to four shots and changed the entire tournament and the entire feeling on the back nine."

After that, perhaps the only drama left in the tournament was Woods' response to Rory Sabbatini's decision to withdraw from the final round. Sabbatini, who has had a few contentious moments in the past with Woods, was in last place and pulled out of the tournament Sunday morning.

Sabbatini reportedly told event officials he was withdrawing for personal reasons. Later, the South African's agent told the Associated Press that his early departure was due to shin splints.

"I just don't really understand — I've had conflicting reports," said Woods, who hosts the tournament that benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation. "I've heard he had shin splints, I heard he pulled out for personal reasons. He packed his locker up at three o'clock yesterday and I think headed to Hawaii.

"A lot of different things going on and I'd like to try and get to the bottom of it when I'm done here, and we'll see what happens."

Leader Nick Watney among the first-timers making noise in Mercedes-Benz Championship's opening round

So much for the notion that veterans had the advantage Thursday in first-round play of the Mercedes-Benz Championship.

First-timer Daniel Chopra was one stroke back of Watney at 69. Fellow tournament newcomers Angel Cabrera (tied for third at 3-under 70) and Brandt Snedeker (tied for sixth at 2-under 71) are also in contention.

The biggest challenge for a first-time player on the hilly 7,411-yard Plantation Course?

"I would have to say the greens, just learning the grain and knowing the grain," Watney said Thursday in his post-round press conference. "It's very strong. Some putts downwind, down grain are extremely fast, where into the grain it feels like you're putting on like Velcro almost."

However, Watney certainly handled himself well enough. The 26-year-old from Sacramento, Calif., didn't miss a fairway or a green on his back nine and highlighted his round by making a 30-foot putt for birdie on the par-4 17th hole.

"My caddie was really good today," said Watney, who won last year's Zurich Classic. "I think for me personally with the green, if I don't know what a putt is going to do, then I'll just play grain. So it worked out today."

In a round that featured wind and both sunshine and rain for most of the players, Watney got off to a solid start with three consecutive birdies on holes 3-5 before recording his only bogey at No. 7. However, he bounced back with birdies at Nos. 9, 15 and 17 to sit atop the first-round leaderboard for the fourth time in his young PGA Tour career.

Jonathan Byrd and Aaron Baddeley are tied with Cabrera for third at 70. Mike Weir joined Snedeker in sixth place at 71 and Stephen Ames, Steve Flesch and Rory Sabbatini are tied for eighth at 72.

Chopra carried over his strong finish to the 2007 campaign into the tournament. He recorded two top-five finishes in his last four Tour starts, including his victory in the Ginn Sur Mer Classic.

"I felt good about my game in the entire offseason," Chopra told reporters. "Today. I managed to — finally — it felt like I hit a few drives out there where I was rotating everything and the timing was good and I was back again."

With 10 players breaking par, it marked the third consecutive opening round of the Mercedes-Benz Championship where 12 or fewer players were able to shoot red numbers. There were no bogey-free rounds Thursday in the fairly difficult conditions.

That fact made Watney feel even better about his 68.

"I'm very happy with it," Watney said. "I'm very pleased, but at the same time it's the first day of the first tournament of the year, so we've got a long ways to go.

"It's definitely good for my confidence."

Three of the previous five first-round leaders or co-leaders in the Mercedes-Benz have gone on to win the tournament, including 2007 champion Vijay Singh. Stuart Appleby (2004) and Ernie Els (2003) also recorded wire-to-wire victories in that stretch.

The last player to win this tournament as a first-time participant was Sergio Garcia in 2002.

Winter Break

As the pros enjoy a brief vacation, tennis fans get a chance to sit back and reflect on the year that was.

Despite some shaky periods, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal maintained their grip on the game’s big events, winning all four Grand Slams between them for the second straight year. Nadal captured his third straight French Open, while Federer took the other three majors and brought his total haul to 12 Slams, putting Pete Sampras’ record of 14 within reach.

To make it, the world No. 1 will have to hold off a mixture of established and emerging threats like Nadal, Novak Djokovic and David Nalbandian, and capture at least two majors next season. If he doesn’t, the sport is in for a major shakeup as Federer’s stranglehold on the men’s game eases for the first time in four years. Either, the season ahead promises to be an exciting one.

Justine Henin emerged as the Federer of the women’s game this year, winning two Grand Slams and going undefeated during the post-Wimbledon half of the season. The Williams sisters staged another trademark come-from-nowhere resurgence, with Serena winning the Australian Open ranked No. 81 and Venus taking her fourth Wimbledon crown. A pair of Serbians, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic, made their way into the top 5.

Things will only get more crowded at the top as Maria Sharapova, having struggled with her shoulder and confidence all season, suggested she may be returning to form after a riveting battle against Henin in the Sony Ericsson WTA championships final that lasted nearly three and a half hours. Will all these players battle for the big titles next year, or will one manage to emerge as a dominant force?
